Thursday night I had a chance for an “old home night” by paying a brief visit to the Berks County Genealogical Society in Reading, PA. The speaker for the evening was going to be the first president of the society, Laurel Miller, who was the person who taught me so much during my formative years in genealogy in the mid-1980s.

Laurel has since become a missionary in Africa who makes occasional visits back home to Berks County.

I kidded her that she basically told me I was going to succeed her as editor of the Journal of the Berks County Genealogical Society in 1988 – which was true! – since I didn’t think I could turn down a living legend of Berks County genealogy.

Also present at the meeting was John Grimes – who was the first person I was connected with when I started my family history journey in 1984 since we had a number of Tulpehocken region lines in common.

It was wonderful to take a step back and thank Laurel for all the opportunities she opened for me!
